For many years South Tyneside has been a popular destination for group visits. Many groups make the most of a visit to this lovely area by using South Tyneside Council's guiding service for pre-booked incoming coach tours.
An experienced guide will join your coach as it enters the borough of South Tyneside and will bring the area alive with stories about it's past, present and future.
We offer four main tours, each one lasting approximately 3 hours within South Tyneside.
Catherine Cookson TrailA fascinating tour of the borough of South Tyneside showing your group the areas associated with the life of Britain's most popular author. The tour will pass the site of Cookson's birthplace, former home and places of work and worship. The tour finishes at South Shields Museum, which features a number of exhibits about Catherine Cookson.
Bede, Books and RomansFind out about the fascinating life of Catherine Cookson and the great history of South Tyneside. The tour includes a visit to Bede's World (small admission fee applicable), where your group can learn more about the life and times of the Venerable Bede who lived and worked in Jarrow 1300 years ago, and a visit to Arbeia Roman Fort & Museum in South Shields. Arbeia is part of the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site and the stunning reconstructions of the West Gate, the Barrack Block and Commander's Villa provide a complete picture of life in Roman Britain.
Maritime TrailCelebrate South Tyneside's long and proud maritime tradition on this fascinating tour.
The trail includes a visit to Souter Lighthouse (small admission fee applicable), the first lighthouse in the UK specifically constructed for electric illumination by carbon arc lamps when it opened in 1871, and a tour along the stunning coastline of South Tyneside. Other points of interest along the way include the Mill Dam area, the Merchant Navy Memorial and South Shields Museum & Art Gallery.
Art Trail...Enjoy a visual feast and discover South Tyneside's vibrant and contemporary art. Our tour guide will take your group past many pieces of thought provoking art, and will also visit the Customs House, a great arts and entertainment venue, and South Shields Museum and Art Gallery, which features a number of touring and permanent displays.
Tours can also be tailor made to suit your requirements.
The South Tyneside guiding service is available at a fee of £35.00 (plus VAT) per tour and is subject to availability.
