Markets

Grainger Market (Peter Atkinson)Nothing awakens the senses quite like a traditional market and this area hosts a variety of regular and permanent markets selling everything from local farm produce to arts and crafts, books and video games. Newcastle's Grainger Market was opened in 1835 and is now a Grade I listed building. This covered market in the city centre is open Monday-Saturday each week selling fresh produce, clothes, toys and an original Marks & Spencer Penny Bazaar! Other regular markets in the city include the Quayside market on Sunday mornings, the Farmers & Country Market (held between 9:30am and 2:30pm on the first Friday of each month next to Grey's Monument), and nearby Tynemouth Market; a market with a difference, which is held in the seaside town's Victorian Metro station on a Sunday. You could also stay in Tynemouth to browse the many interesting antique shops there.

South Shields MarketSouth Shields Market is the focal point for the town centre and attracts thousands of visitors and bargain hunters from near and far. Each week it is alive with the buzz of bargain hunters and the banter of stallholders. The long-established Market offers all the best to be found in an open-air traditional marketplace. It is one of the oldest and most popular markets in the Northeast held in a traditional square with the Eighteenth century old town hall at its heart. The historic church of St Hilda stands on the South side of the marketplace; there has been a church on the site since 647 A.D. Markets are held on the following days between 10.00am and 4.00pm:

  • Saturday: Traditional Market
  • Monday: Traditional Market
  • Friday: Flea Market
