Add Gibside to your Itinerary

One of the North's finest landscapes, much of which is SSSI, Gibside is a forest garden currently under restoration, embracing many miles of walks through woodland and beside the river Derwent. There are several outstanding buildings, including a Palladian Chapel, column of Liberty, Georgian Stables and Green House. The estate is the former home of the Queen Mother's family the Bowes-Lyons.
The Column of Liberty, rising dramatically high above the treetops is the first sight visitors get of this impressive landscape garden created by the Bowes family in the 18th Century. Spanning 160 hectares (400 acres), Gibside is a 'grand design' of spectacular vistas, winding paths and grassy open spaces. At key points stand decorative garden buildings such as the Palladian Chapel, Georgian Stables, Green House and the ruins of a bath house and hall. There is a wonderfully tranquil atmosphere and visitors will feel themselves very close to nature as much of Gibside is a site of special scientific interest.
