Geordies or Mackems?? There are a few things you really should try and do when you come to the North East - things that are special and unique to this area...
First, get into the spirit of the place and leave your coat at home. No one - but no one - wears a coat for an evening out, regardless of the weather. But do dress up - people here know how to enjoy themselves and dressing for the occasion is part of the fun.
Clearly, a bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale, the legendary brown stuff - which has been brewed here for 80 years - is a must. Head for the Crown Posada, near Newcastle's Quayside, one of the city's oldest and most atmospheric pubs. Or find your way up to the Free Trade Inn, a spit-and-sawdust pub with some of the best river views in town.
Fortify yourself with a fish supper. You can't beat the fantastically fresh fish and chips at the Fish Quay in North Shields; the fish is straight off the boats. Why not venture slightly further along the coast to sample some fine Indian food on Ocean Road in South Shields.
How about some traditional live music to round off the day? The Bridge Hotel (0191 232 6400), which dates back to the 1870s, by the High Level Bridge and the Castle Keep hosts a folk club every Monday evening, while The Cumberland Arms in Ouseburn has folk sessions as well as real ale and storytelling.
And the best way to be local? Be friendly. Everything you've heard about North East England offering a great warm welcome is true.
